School is in session

It's that time of the year again. School is back in session and those big yellow school buses are back on the road. Some in the canyon are apparently unaware of the law when it comes to passing a school bus. It is in your best interest to be aware of it since violations can result in penalties of up to $1,000 and a 1 year drivers license suspension. It could also trigger an increase in your automobile insurance.

In California you may not pass a school bus, in either direction, as long as the alternating red lights are flashing and/or the stop sign is out (if the bus is equiped with one). There are exceptions when there is a center divider in the road but this does not apply anywhere in SLV except for on Mt. Hermon Rd and Scotts Valley Blvd.

When the red lights are flashing treat it just like a red traffic light. Stop and do not proceed until the lights are turned off.
